Major Concepts/Content. In this American Government course the student gains an understanding of American government and its role in American society. Students learn about the inter-relation of the government and the economy. Students study important documents such as the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Federalist Papers and other sources. Students gain knowledge of the different branches of the government and the system of checks and balances. Individuals study state and local governments and how they work with the national government. Furthermore, students learn about political parties and groups as well as other contemporary issues. They study the rights and responsibilities of citizens toward the democratic process and how to fulfill their civic duties, as well as how to discover career opportunities in the government services.
